The problems and scopes of the macroseismic intensity scales are discussed.
The main attention is given to MSK (Medvedev-Sponheuer-Karnik)-scales. Some uncertainties and mistakes in MSK-64 scale are indicated using the seismic upset analysis. These faults make doubtful the results of the scale practical use.
Some proposals are formulated concerning macroseismic scales practical use.
The proposal of waiving the notions and parameters of the macroseismic scale in further development of design codes and standards is discussed.
